The Office of Compline

Blessing

May the Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Little Chapter

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, is walking about seeking whom he may devour; whom resist, steadfast in the faith.    R. Thanks be to God.

Confession

We confess to our God and Father, before the whole company of heaven and one another, that we have sinned, through our own fault, in thought, word and deed and in what we have left undone. Wherefore we pray him to forgive us our sins and to keep us in eternal life. Amen.

May the almighty and merciful God grant us forgiveness of all our sins and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Versicle

V. O God make speed to save us    R. O Lord make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Alleluia. [in Lent: Praise to you, O Lord, King of eternal glory]

Psalms of the Day

Hymn

Before the ending of the day; Creator of the world, we pray; That you, with steadfast love, would keep; Your watch around us while we sleep.

From evil dreams defend our sight. From fears and terrors of the night; Tread under foot our deadly foe, That we no sinful thought may know.

To God the Father, God the Son. And God the Spirit, Three in One: All honour, praise, and glory be From age to age eternally.

(Hymn on Sundays)

Glory to thee, my God, this night; For all the blessings of the light; Keep me, O keep me, King of kings; Beneath thy own almighty wings.

Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son, The ill that I this day have done, That with the world, myself and thee, I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise him, all creatures here below, Praise him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Preserve us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and in peace we may take our rest. (Paschal Time: Alleluia)

Nunc Dimittis

Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace: * your word has been fulfilled.

My own eyes have seen the salvation * which you have prepared in the sight of every people;

A light to reveal you to the nations * and the glory of your people Israel .

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen. (Antiphon)

Collect

Visit, we beseech you, O Lord, this house, and drive far from it all the snares of the enemy: May your holy angels dwell with us and keep us in peace and may your blessing be upon us evermore: Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing

The Lord bless us and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us and be gracious to us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us and give us peace.

For the departed

De Profundis  Antiphon

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord * and let light perpetual shine upon them.

De Profundis  (Psalm 130)

Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; * let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

If you, Lord, were to mark what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? * But there is forgiveness with you, so that you shall be feared.

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. * My soul waits for the Lord, more than the night watch for the morning, more than the night watch for the morning.

O Israel , wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; * With him is plenteous redemption and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen. (Antiphon)
